Neyland 1st XI vers Johnston
Neyland 1st XI were away to near neighbours Johnston on Saturday 18th October. The Nomads and the Tigers were evenly matched throughout the entire game although there were periods when the visitors must have thought that the balance was swaying in their favour.
After a testing opening 30 minutes both teams had equal share of the play although neither keeper was tested. It was at this half hour stage that the Nomads made an initial breakthrough when a ball ‘over the top’ was collected by striker Leigh Power who took possession, made a 20 yard run and fired the ball high over the Tiger’s keeper and in to the net to give the visitors the first advantage.
After the interval it was ‘much of the same’ as both sides endeavoured to capitalise on the frequent forward forays. After 20 minutes the Nomads latched on to a golden opportunity in the crowded Johnston six yard box, and from a melee of players an offensive strike from Neyland appeared to have dividends as the ball seemed to cross the line for a 2-0 margin. However, much to the annoyance of the visiting players, the referee deemed that the ball did not cross the line.
This proved to be a pivotal point in the game since with just 15 minutes remaining Johnston succeeded in scoring a goal – courtesy of Steve Mills – in a similar fashion to that of the Nomad’s goal. The strike was aimed at the top of the net and although keeper Ollie Marshall managed to get his hands to the ball, the power of the shot resulted in a goal. The 1-1 final score was a credit to the visitors but in retrospect the Nomads might have been somewhat disappointed with the outcome.
